FW: BuyBlue.org Action Alert and Other Updates

BuyBlue Supporters,

The San Francisco Chronicle brings us a report today on a group which has launched a boycott against Target (story: here). California Consumers United is running a $50,000 ad campaign against Target which piggybacks on Target's recent efforts to reach out to seniors and working class families. They are doing this because of the large amount of money that has been contributed to California Governor Schwarzenegger. The article reports at least $660,000 in donations to Schwarzenegger and political causes associated with Schwarzenegger. This kind of money is very hard to track so the real number might be different.

Target also contributed 83% of their $212,000 in contributions during the 2003-2004 election cycle to Republican candidates. You can find their profile at BuyBlue here.

We suggest you contact Target and voice your opinions on the matter. You can find email, phone and fax contact information on our web site here. You can also post the letters you send and discuss this with other readers.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to let everyone know about some things to expect from BuyBlue in the near future.

1. Our New Web Site: We have been talking about our new site all summer and we are finally putting the finishing touches on several presentation elements. We have almost 200 companies completed that we'll begin posting on the new site. Please be on the lookout for a release announcement in the next two weeks.

2. Advertising on BART: We will be launching our first print advertising campaign on San Francisco's BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) in September. The primary goal of this campaign is to increase awareness about the web site and our research. If successful we intend to conduct similar campaigns in other areas.

3. BuyBlue Local Initiative: Please be on the lookout for an announcement of our plans for our BuyBlue Local initiative. BuyBlue Local will be an effort to research and promote local businesses. We are working with a pilot chapter and will eventually expand membership nationally.

4. California Special Election: In the next few weeks we plan to begin a campaign focused on the upcoming California Special Election wherein we intend to document political contributions made to each side. Please look for a kickoff announcement with a link to the campaign.

We'd like to take a moment to thank our supporters and readers because items #1 and #2 would not have been possible without your generous contributions. Thank You!

The next few months should prove to be an exciting time for BuyBlue. This message goes out to almost 30,000 people and I'm sure that number will continue to grow.

Regards,

Raven Brooks
