Fw: Momentum Builds: Torture is Not US

Two things you can do today to help spread the word:

(1) Tell a friend about the Torture is Not US campaign.
(2) If you have a blog or a website, link it to Torture is Not US.

Here at the American Progress Action Fund, we have been working to ensure that Congress stands up for American values and puts a stop to torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners in U.S. custody.

As a Senior Fellow at American Progress, where I work on civil liberties and human rights, I want to thank you for joining this effort by sending a message to Congress and participating in our Torture Is Not US campaign.

Thanks to you and the thousands of our fellow Americans who have joined the campaign, our message is being heard.

But we have much work to do.

While the bipartisan Anti-Torture Amendment sponsored by Senator McCain was overwhelmingly approved by the U.S. Senate, the amendment will not be considered by the House of Representatives until after Congress returns from the Thanksgiving recess.

Meanwhile, Vice President Cheney continues his efforts to defeat or weaken the amendment.

As the legislative maneuvers unfold, we will be taking our TV ad to the airwaves in key districts.  We’ll keep you posted as the situation develops.

For now, we really need your help to keep the pressure on Congress to pass the amendment with no exceptions. You can further build momentum by spreading the word about the Torture Is Not US campaign:

(1)  Click here to tell your friends to visit our website, see the ad, and take action.

(2)  Click here to link your own website or blog to our campaign.

The abuse of prisoners in U.S. custody is inconsistent with American values and American interests: it’s morally indefensible; it puts our troops at risk; it produces unreliable and inaccurate intelligence; and it undermines our ability to prevail in the battle of ideas. As CIA Director Porter Goss said Monday, torture simply “does not work.”

Thank you for all that you are doing to put an end to these practices.  We wish you a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving.

Mark Agrast and the entire American Progress Action Fund team
